Help me give my students primer to complete painting our wood picket fencing panels in order to make them look like colored pencils to create an outdoor reading garden.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Enter the Reading Garden and Watch Us Grow!
My 5th-grade students are from a diverse, low-income area located in Hammond, Indiana.
I work with high ability avid readers who are craving a quiet place to read...outside!
This project will not only benefit my students but our entire school! These kids love the hands-on aspect of any project, and I love the idea that they are giving back to our school and community. It is such a pleasure to work with them every day!
My Project
After receiving a grant for 30 panels of wood fencing, our 4th and 5th-grade students will create an outdoor reading garden.
Lincoln students will enter a magical, inviting, quiet area to read where they will be inspired by book titles written on colored pencils which have been transformed from wood picket fencing.
Each colored pencil(picket) will be painted in bright colors. Each student in 4th and 5th grade will paint a picket and write their favorite book title on the side of the pencil. The completed fence panels of colored pencils will be installed outside in a grassy area to create an outdoor reading garden.
Most of the materials have been purchased, however, there is still a need for outdoor primer, so that the paint will adhere and last through inclement weather.
