Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach visual arts to students of various grade and age levels at one particular elementary school, located in a high-need community. These students need lots of positive exposure and ability to explore art and be able to express themselves.
Many of my art students of upper grade levels (grades 5-8), expressed high interest in making something while learning to weave. Many students asked if they could weave this year and I will try my best to accommodate their wishes. Do to limited funding in our school, I will not be able to teach my students to weave without your help in this matter.
In order to be able to fulfill my students' wish of learning to weave, we need simple weaving looms. This particular activity will teach the process of weaving as well as it will allow them to create a woven piece they will be able to take home and cherish. I would like these students to gain a positive experience in their lives.
Unfortunately, all these students come from very poor families and do not have much to show for. I believe that this project will allow them to realize that they are capable of making something useful and beautiful they can keep forever. In addition, I believe this will open their eyes and minds to other kinds of art they are used to see around through media or books.
You will make it possible for my students to experience the joy of creating woven art pieces. This process will not only introduce them to the world of weaving but also allow them to make a creation of their own. In addition, once one group of students is finished with this project, other groups of students at our school will be able to benefit from having these looms and yarn, so, they could create their woven pieces and gain appreciation for various objects made out of yarn, woven on a loom.
