Ensuring Novel Studies Year Long

Help me give my students the ability to keep reading novels in the class!

FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Wolman's classroom raised $216

This project is fully funded

My Students

My school is a Title I K-8 school in Houston, Texas that has an incredibly diverse student population; moreover, 13% African-American, 38% Hispanic, 18% Caucasian, 28% Asian, and 3% two or more races.

This project is targeting all my students who I teach.

My job as an educator is to help every single student in my classroom become more proficient in the English language. This project is designed to fill the current voids of my classroom, and to help the entirety of my classroom grow.

My Project

A novel study is, simply stated, when the class reads a novel and studies it. This can be done in many ways: as a teacher reading aloud or each student having their own copy are two ways to use novel studies in the classroom. In a novel study the teacher is the one guiding the students through the book. This differs from book clubs or literature circles where students take the leadership roles.

In my classroom, the students love novel studies.

Students follow along as we read together. Through reading together, there are so many positive effects that happen for our students. Students often improve in their reading comprehension. They improve in their listening and speaking skills. Even some novels bring forth a cultural or social change for the better.

This project is focusing on bringing “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho to the classroom. Paulo Coelho's masterpiece tells the mystical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure. His quest will lead him to riches far different—and far more satisfying—than he ever imagined. Santiago's journey teaches us about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, of recognizing opportunity, and, most importantly, to follow our dreams. As of now, I have 10 copies of The Alchemist. I need another 18 copies for each student to have a copy during class
