Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 4th grade students are from an urban area and they do not get enough exposure to honorable literature that is developmentally appropriate. Some tell me they do not even have books at home. We are a high need community that is economically challenged. My students would greatly benefit from a literature and listening station.
Currently, my classroom is supposed to house 300 books and I am no where near that. More importantly, the books that I do have are not always on my students' reading levels. My students are avid readers, but some do not even have books in their homes. I would like for them to be exposed to great literature and the Caldecott Medal, Coretta Scott King Author Award, and Newbery books are great artifacts for a classroom. The listening station will also provide my students with the opportunity to listen to the stories provided in our textbook anthology. I already have the Cd's needed to play at the listening station.
These books will also help to develop my students' avid interest in writing. They will give them an authentic example of the strategies and techniques writers use when writing. They will learn and observe many skills, including ways to begin and end stories, dialog, character development, setting, and plot. They will engage in writing activities introduced by the literature. The listening station will model reading fluency to my students along with the reading I do aloud. It will also provide them with the opportunity to listen to their own voice to self monitor their own reading fluency.
Your help will ensure that my students are exposed to various types of literature in their classroom. It will also enrich their writing skills because they will be able to review the literature and pattern of writing from the award winning authors in each of the series I have requested. The listening station will enhance the textbook activities we already do in class and provide fluency practice. Please make a difference in the lives of these students by funding these resources. Thank you.
