My Students
I teach at a Title I school in west Harlem. Many of the students receive free lunch. Our students come from various cultural backgrounds, and have various learning needs. Our class is unique since it is an ICT (Integrated co-teaching) class. Our class includes general education students, as well as students with special needs that have special education plans to help them learn and meet the state education standards. 3/4 of the students in our class this year are reading below grade level, and need extra literacy support.
My Project
We teach in a 3rd grade Integrated Co-Teaching classroom. We have students with special needs, students who speak English as a second language, and students that are just not interested in reading because books do not appeal to them. More than half of our class this year is reading below grade level.
However, by purchasing exciting, colorful, interesting books to add to our classroom library, this will encourage our students to read more!
These books contain characters with diverse interests as well as characters that have diverse backgrounds, that our students can identify with! They are colorful and appealing to children of all academic levels, so that even though our students may be reading at lower levels, all of the books look exciting and interesting to read.
