Eno Valley Eagles Can Be Ecologists, Naturalists and Conservationists, too!

Help me give my students the tools they need to discover and identify native wildlife that lives on our campus and in the woods behind our school.

My Project

Eno Valley Elementary is a suburban school bordering the district's outdoor education campus, The Hub Farm. The Hub Farm, situated along the playground and soccer field fence behind the school, serves as a unique resource for our wildlife observation project. Eno Valley students come from suburban and urban neighborhoods. Observing local wildlife can be tricky so close to a big city, but with the woods and Hub Farm practically next door, students have noticed wildlife on our campus, such as Canada Geese, various songbirds, and squirrels. Students wonder if other animals, such as whitetail deer, skunks, opossums, and foxes, live in these woods.

My future ecologists, naturalists, and conservationists will play a crucial role in this wildlife observation project.

Equipped with field guides, binoculars, and two trail cameras, they will use their naturalist skills to observe, identify, and collect data about the wildlife and habitats around our school. Their science notebooks will serve as a canvas for their research, data collection, and observational sketches, making them active participants in this educational endeavor.

As our scientists investigate, they will integrate NC Standards for Science and the Science and Engineering Practices by applying their knowledge to real-world situations, similar to what ecologists and conservationists do. They will identify wildlife by their functions and habitats, observe how wild animals use their senses in their natural environment, and learn about the habitats and behaviors of NC wildlife in Durham. This knowledge will be directly applicable to a pressing real-world problem, the predicament of NC Red Wolves, providing students with an opportunity to compare a different NC habitat with the local habitats, and to engineer ways for red wolf conservation.

Final products will be student choice, and include sharing their investigations and discoveries with our school through comprehensive presentations, posters, or a field guide.
