Enlarging My Students' World Through Books and Technology

My students need high-quality, high-interest, grade level books and two mini-iPads to help cultivate a love for reading, learning, and continuously pursuing knowledge.

My Students

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis once said, "There are many little ways to enlarge your child’s world. Love of books is the best of all."

I teach reading and writing to two classes of amazing, hard-working 5th grade students on the south side of Chicago.

They are such eager learners and love to explore and see how literacy can be applied to their daily lives. Even with their will and drive to learn, my students are from an extremely low-income, urban neighborhood. This means there is little to no funding for any materials or experiences outside of the district-mandated curriculum and textbooks. Because of this, many of my students just go through the motions with reading and have not had the opportunity to cultivate that love of books. Their circumstances and the neighborhood where they live unfortunately get in the way of their access to many of the amazing texts that are out there that would instill this love in them, and thus enlarge their world.

My Project

My students need high-quality books and iPads to improve literacy and build interest in reading. My students will be able to check the books out of our classroom library to use during independent and partner reading time. They will also be able to take the books home with them so that reading opportunities and the love of literature can break outside of the classroom walls. The iPads will be used for reading as well, allowing students to have access to articles and texts that are online as well as have the opportunity to listen to audio-books and improve their own reading through hearing other fluent readers. Having this opportunity to choose which of these amazing books they want to read and have it be their own will give my students ownership over the learning process. It will also help them feel empowered with the ability to explore and choose.

By donating to this project, you will help my students have access to high-quality, high-interest, grade level books that will afford them the opportunity to fall in love with reading.

And you will not only be doing this, you will also be playing an integral part in enlarging their world.
