Enlarge A Mind by Fostering the Love of Reading

My students need copies of 'Out of My Mind' and 'The One and Only Ivan' to support our reading goal of 2 million minutes and to foster a love of reading and learning.

My Students

"There are many little ways to enlarge your child'€™s world. Love of books is the best of all." - Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. These books were chosen with care for the kids who have not found the secret doors that lead to other worlds, the worlds of adventure between the covers of a good book.

Welcome to 6th grade Language Arts class with Mrs. K.

My classroom is a colorful mix of economic classes, a treasure trove of stories and talents and a diverse collection of intellectual abilities. Conversations run the gamut from soccer game scores to what happened in "The Flash" and why Grandma Hiddle in the book "Walk Two Moons" is either weird or funny-cool. The walls are covered with standards that we are working on, drawings of super-heroes and flowers, and caricatures of different students. Debate is their favorite thing to do. Give them a topic, a few minutes for research and off they go. They will continue to debate even during a fire drill. Walk into my classroom any day and you will see kids with books trying to sneak in a few more minutes of reading because, "I can't help it. I'm at the best part!". Or, you will see kids who roll their eyes every time reading is mentioned.

My Project

Why did you stop to read about this project? Did the idea of books or reading catch your attention? Maybe you, like me, believe that reading books or just reading in general enhances lives. My goal as a teacher has always been to encourage life-long learning. My class will use the books to enhance our understanding of literary devices (personification, imagery), story elements (plot, character development, perspective), philology, etc.I am also planning to use the books to open up discussions about issues that occur in our own lives. Life lessons about how differences should not divide but instead, unite. By reading as a class, I am hoping that the ESL students become more comfortable reading in a safe environment. Finally, I want to encourage the kids to read for the sheer joy of reading.

My goal is to give all the students a chance to read or track while others are reading.

Words that are unfamiliar can be defined thus, increasing vocabulary. An increased vocabulary allows people to better express their thoughts and emotions which then leads to better communication. Voracious readers normally become life-long learners. Group reading and discussions will help prepare the students for the rigor of English Literature with less pressure, hopefully, increasing their confidence.
