My students need iPads for improving their reading and math skills. They can also use them creatively, doing videos and taking pictures for special projects.

My Students
My school has a nurturing environment and an ethnically diverse population with over thirty different nationalities. It is located in a very affluent neighborhood of middle-class and upper middle-class families. My students' families, on the other hand, are working class and poor. They come from Mexico, Honduras, and El Salvador. The adults have menial jobs, and some are illiterate. Every morning, as the students wait in the school cafeteria, one can see the sharp contrast between the haves and the have-nots, as the former pull out their tablets to play, and the latter look over their shoulders.
Technology has become one of the vehicles of educational advancement.
Computers and iPads at home allow for access to information, opportunities, efficient communication, etc. Many students come to school already knowing the basics (or more) of using that technology. My students do not. They have often not handled an iPad, done a google search, or logged into a computer. For my students, that technological savvy must start in school: in my classroom, or in the computer lab.
My Project
I have students with a diversity of learning styles: tactile, visual, auditory and synesthetic. IPads can address that diversity. Although most of my students have never touched a tablet, they are fascinated by them. Having access to iPads will drive them to learn.
There are numerous educational iPad apps for improving the reading, thinking, and math skills of young students; both in English and in Spanish.
There are wonderful interactive children ebooks for improving literacy. They can do Internet research with their iPads. Most importantly, they can also use its tools creatively; making videos and taking pictures for their projects.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
