My Students
Do you enjoy color? Patterned paper? Fancy-edged scissors? Fun punch-outs? Journaling? Captions? We do! My third graders look forward each week to a chance to scrapbook their school memories from the week. We need a way to print color photos to complete our scrapbook pages.
My classroom is racially, economically and linguistically diverse.
We value ourselves, our families, our neighborhoods, and our school experiences. We love our school, and spend many happy days full of learning, growing and communicating. When one of my students was gone for several days, he came back and said, "I just want to hug the room!" We are a public school with over 60 % of students on free and reduced lunch; though each day carries challenges, I enjoy coming to school every morning and spending my day with these smart, energetic, enthusiastic learners.
My Project
Every Thursday afternoon we spend an hour working on pages for our scrapbooks. Our writing for the page takes various forms, including summaries, lists, essays and timelines. We include reflections of special events (like a field trip, or guest speaker) as well as accounts of daily activities (reading, recess, music class). We need a way to print color photos at school, so that each child can include a corresponding photo of him or herself on each page. Having a color printer in our room will enable students to select and print photos of themselves to include with their scrapbook pages. Having a specific photo about which to write will inspire and encourage the students. Photos of themselves as learners will help to establish their school identity as a learner.
Nearly every week one of the children will ask me, "Do we really get to take these home at the end of the year?
Really?" They love their scrapbooks. In addition to practicing writing skills, it has become a way of affirming identity, communicating with families, and celebrating our learning together. The inclusion of color photos will make it a scrapbook to treasure for years to come...I tell my students that they will one day show this to their own children!
