Enhancing Visual Learning on iPads

Help me give my students visual and educational support by using iPads so they can enrich their learning experience and engage in new ways to learn through technology.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a special education teacher. My students are part of a self-contained 8:1:1 autism school program. They have an innate love for learning; however, many have severe speech, language, and cognitive delays. They are nonverbal, and it’s difficult for them to learn socially acceptable cues and behaviors. My students don't learn traditionally; they benefit from teacher-made materials, including adapted books and picture symbols.

Creating a classroom community that fosters innovative learning that is responsive to individual needs is essential.

Meaningful writing and language activities go hand and hand to provide opportunities to learn.

My students require visual/auditory cues combined with teacher modeling to process language. They can learn; however, they learn differently and need visual support to help them reach their potential.

My vision for using iPads is multi-dimensional. I feel that the visual technology that iPads provide will improve communication and the social needs of my students. As a teacher, adapting new techniques to learning and thinking outside the box is imperative!

I have observed that the use of iPads has been very positive for my students. They remain on task independently for a longer time and retain the information they have learned. Most of all, my students experience a sense of accomplishment when using the iPad as a preferred and effective learning device. Unfortunately, our iPads are becoming obsolete and cannot be updated to the newest and appropriate technology and programs.

Additionally, I will use real images with expanded vocabulary on the iPads and incorporate them into daily differentiated lessons. I will also download photographs to work on relevant social stories geared to individual situations, which will improve socially acceptable cues and behaviors.
