This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are creative, intriguing and really eager to learn new things.
They have their own unique learning styles.
Some of my students are visual learners, while others are auditory, verbal and kinesthetic learners. They like to communicate, they love to read and write. Many of them are being raised by grandparents and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute I walked in the door of our classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. Since I didn't start off at the beginning of the year with this class, I have some catching up with them to do. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My students have been through a lot this year, including Hurricane Harvey where some of them lost everything they had. Some are even still living in hotels. With some of my students already having trouble in reading, my project is to make sure they have everything possible within their classroom to help improve their reading skills.
My Project
I would like to give my students a variety of reading books so they will have a choice of books on their reading levels. When students are given a choice they feel empowered. This helps students take ownership of their learning. I would love to build up the classroom library, so students will have access to high- interest text. The books will help my students begin to read faster, to read in meaningful phrases as opposed to word- by -word, and to read with greater expression. The books, tablets and listening center will help my students become fluent readers. My students learn by doing. Having tablets will allow my students to choose from many different stories online to read. They will also use the tablets to track their progress in reading. This will give them another way to take ownership of their learning. Currently there's no computers or tablets in my classroom for the students to use however with your donation, my student's will also have access to technology within their classroom. My students learn best when they are given hands-on experiences. Being able to use technology within the classroom daily in elementary school means that by the time they enter middle school they will be well prepared.. The students will use the listening center as a station, to help build up their listening skills and give them the confidence they need to build up their fluency. Please help my students develop as readers by helping us expand our classroom reading material.Giving low-income students access to technology and a variety of reading material is an investment in their future.
