This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Hi, I am Ms. Barahona and I am so excited to share the idea behind my project. This is my second year teaching in a Dual Third grade class. As a dual language teacher, one of my priorities is to create a comfortable and engaging reading space with flexible seating where my third graders are not only exposed to a variety of print in both languages (English and Spanish) but a space where they can sit and read comfortably. My class currently doesn't have a bookshelf where our Spanish books can be displayed and neither have a variety of English and Spanish books collections to read from.
My students would truly benefit from having a space with a bookshelf and flexible seating where they do not only have easy access to our Spanish library, but a space where they can move around which will help them to stay focused.
It would be so exciting for them to have access to a book collection (in English and Spanish) that is culturally relevant to their different walks of life. Culturally relevant books certainly facilitate culturally responsive teaching in a bilingual classroom and the students will not only identify but make connections with the stories being told in the books.
Furthermore, third grade is a testing grade and Math is one of the core subjects that many students need extra support with. This is why having multiplication games is imperative not only as extra support but also to make learning Math a fun process. Having Math multiplication games will support third graders to build on their math skills and prepare them for their state test.
Donating to this project will inspire my students to become avid readers of two languages and will influence their learning experience in a positive way.
