Enhancing Science With Art

Help me give my students fine motor manipulatives which will also create an abundance of STEAM lessons. I would love to add an art component to the basic STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) lesson.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am lucky enough to teach kindergarten and first-grade art! I strive daily to instill a love of the arts in my young students so that they will continue to appreciate art as adults. We study famous artists, as well as the elements of art while working on fun, hands-on activities.

I teach art on a large primary campus in a small community with a high number of low-income students.

I teach 400 children under the age of seven every week. I teach kindergarten and first grade, including special needs and bilingual classes. The look on the faces of my students when we complete an art project is priceless. They are so proud when they finish a project. I have been teaching at my school for 22 years and continue to love every minute of it!

My Project

My goal for the 2019-2020 school year is to combine art with STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, math). The idea behind STEM projects is to enhance the skills of technical, critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving in children of all ages. I would love to add an art component to this idea.

I believe adding art into STEM projects will provide a component to spark a child's imagination and love of learning!

I have many students who are successful in my art class yet have a feeling of defeat in core subjects, such as science and math. If I can assist these students in being successful in STEM through art, their confidence will boost, as well as their learning. An example would be the Log Builder set. My kindergarten and first-grade students can use these logs to build structures that stand. My job would be to add an art component to this activity. For example, once students have built a building with the log builders, I would assist them in drawing their creation, then painting it with watercolors. This activity would not only teach the elements of art, such as line, and color, but also the skills of science, technology, engineering, and math by developing skills in problem-solving, the design process, and cause and effect. Each activity set I have chosen can be applied to the art classroom to transform STEM lessons into STEAM lessons!
