This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help us stay focused! Our Speech and Language room used to be a bathroom. Space in our school is at a premium. Our room is crowded and miniscule. Students' work and supplies need a home. It is all exposed and stacked in one side of the room. It is visually overstimulating. Help me help them regain focus.

We service over 150 low income bilingual students.

Many of them reside in multi-family apartments where space and resources are limited. My students are Kindergarten through Fifth graders with speech and language and multiple disabilities are diagnosed with but not limited to ADHD, PDD, Aspergers and Turner Syndrome. The majority of my students have reduced attention spans and require modification of instruction and often require a structured organized setting. Since many of my resources are kinesthetic, it is imperative that my students have the opportunity to independently navigate their learning environment to access all resources that will help support them in making academic progress.

My Project

This narrow yet tall storage closet will fit through our room's abnormally narrow door, maximize use of vertical space, reduce the clutter of school supplies and educational materials, and house the students folders, notebooks and other supplies used during their sessions. It will reduce their impulsivity of getting up to get unnecessary materials and increase the need to communicate to request for their things using questions and complete sentences. It will reduce distractions caused by visually stimulating educational games. In turn it will allow students to complete their work on time with less interjections.

Receiving this generous gift of a supply closet will greatly impact my current and future students in order to continue to reduce their distractions, increase their attention spans and promote organization.

My students will have a place to store their learning portfolios and experience the importance of staying organized and focused.
