This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm so lucky to have a class of amazing and inquisitive 5th graders. It makes me so happy to come in each day and watch them question things and grow as learners. In particular, this is not a class that I will soon forget. This school year has been upside down as, together, we cope with the pandemic. Many of my students have parents and guardians who are frontline workers so our school has been disproportionately affected by shutdowns and quarantine. Despite that, they carry on with positive attitudes.
My Project
After conducting an interest survey on my fifth graders, I have picked out our next class wide novel study: the first book in the Percy Jackson series. I am seeking physical copies of the book since this year most things have been digital and our library has been closed due to COVID.
My students would greatly benefit from having physical copies of the book for our next novel study.
Digital books are nice, but I can tell my students are getting a bit of "tech burnout". I've requested 22 copies in anticipation of a larger class the following school year.
In my efforts to foster a love of reading, my students also indicated that they greatly enjoy graphic novels. I would like to add a collection of them to my classroom library for the kids to pick out and read during independent reading time.
