This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The moment students enter my class I am greeted by big smiles and lots of hugs. I encourage my students to foster relationships to build a community instead of just a classroom. I thrive on nurturing peer relationships that enhance my students’ education. Since much of the day is spent in small groups either working on learning centers or completing projects these relationships are imperative.
I am a firm believer in educating the whole child.
Students aren’t only scholars, it is important that their knowledge grows beyond the books. In our class we love planting and taking care of our garden and visiting art museums. Our latest project is building solar ovens. These activities aren’t necessarily the norm, but they are experiences and skills the students will use forever.
I work in a Title I school, where the population is 100% free/reduced breakfast and lunch. While the area is rather impoverished, the community has rallied together behind the students. We are the only school in our district that has an extended school day. We get to be with our students an extra hour every day to offer them intense interventions that suit each student’s needs.
My Project
Many times students believe that Math and Literacy aren't related, but it is important for them to see that reading is everywhere. With the 25 subscriptions to DynaMath magazines my students will see how math is incorporated into current events and informational text. The magazine is designed to supplement instruction on all mathematical domains. This magazine will be used during our Guided Math rotations, either with direct instruction from the teacher or as a center rotation. I am asking for enough magazines so that each child has their own to work in. After we use are supplemental materials (ie: Scholastic News, Time for Kids) the students keep the magazines in their "Just Right Reading Bags" so that they can refer to them at any time throughout the year. The students enjoy being able to go back and reread their favorite articles.
