Enhancing Literacy Instruction with Scholastic News
My students need 23 subscriptions to 4th grade Scholastic News to increase non-fiction literacy skills and to stay updated on current events.

My Students
With the new Common Core State Standards, the rigor in language arts has increased and there is more emphasis on non-fiction text. A subscription to Scholastic News would provide us with additional highly engaging reading material that can help students increase reading fluency and comprehension.
My school is a magnet school for a Spanish/English dual-immersion program in a high poverty population.
My students are all learning to be bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural. They are fun, highly motivated to learn, and are especially interested in current events, math, and science.
My Project
We would use Scholastic News a few times a month to supplement our English reading curriculum. In addition to reading and discussing the articles, students will have access to informational videos and test-prep questions to help prepare them for standardized testing.
I know my class would be extremely excited to receive and read these magazines that our school cannot currently fund.
It would add something fun, yet valuable to their reading instruction time. It would also open up their eyes to news around the world.
