My Students

Have you ever struggled with learning concepts? Wondered how to practice skills independently? Modern technology provides many opportunities to meet these needs, only if we have the resources and knowledge of where to look. A classroom iPad has the potential to bridge school and home learning.

Our cluster (2 homerooms) consists of 44 fifth grade students in a 5/6 intermediate school of about 800 students.

Each cluster has 2 teachers of which I instruct Math, Science, and Social Studies. The students and families in our district have undergone some recent stresses that no one at any age should have to experience. Since these events, many students have been struggling getting back to pace with the academic rigor demanded of them within the curriculum. Our daily 35 minute Learning Lab period is often busy trying to meet these needs by providing the extra individualized academic support for each child.

My Project

Why an iPad? For one, I have identified various apps in Math, Science, and Social Studies that students can use to practice the skills the students need to be more successful and meet individual needs. My goal is to have students work independently and with peers on the iPad while allowing me to work with other students, therefore increasing the support given during this time. Secondly, an iPad would also allow me to showcase apps on our classroom projector system that the students can use at home on their iPads for extra practice and review. Sharing apps; from basic fact practice to geometry and fraction concepts in Math, to visualizations for light, sound, and human senses units in Science, to location practice for states and countries in Social Studies will not only help students in school, but provide the resources for at home practice as well. Thirdly, an iPad would also act as a classroom camera / video camera to record presentations created by students.

The students in our community have been through a great deal lately and dynamics in many homes have changed.

Students are always excited to play games and use technology. I can see the use of this iPad in our classroom not only giving many students the extra support they need but the motivation to excel independently.
