My students need chair pockets to increase instructional time. I am losing precious time when I have to hand out pencils, reading/writing materials to 4/5 years olds.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The kindergarten curriculum has changed. The students are expected to do so much more. I need to make the most out of our school day. These young children still need some form of play and to make sure they get it, I need to maximize our time in the classroom.
Even though our school is located in an impoverished neighborhood, most students come to school with smiles on their faces and eager to learn.
They are full of humor and above all they know that they are loved when they step into my classroom. My ultimate goal for them is to be life-long learners. I need to make school a happy and safe place for them. I also want learning to be fun.
My Project
These chair pockets will increase our instructional time. It is time consuming to hand out materials to very young children. These chair pockets will allow the students to easily turn around and pull out the materials that are needed. At the end of the day I can place the next day's materials in the the pocket. This will save an enormous amount of time during the day. I have an assistant for only 1.5 hours in the day. Trying to hand anything out to up to 28 students can take up time. I need to find a way to make every second count.
I found the students had very little play time.
With the new curriculum, it's very difficult to squeeze in any play time. I needed to think of creative ways to have students move around more and one way was the pocket chairs. Passing out materials takes up time! I can give the students more learning center time. By the end of the week, we may be able to have some form of free play. Children need to explore and learn through play. The resources the district gives us does not lend itself to this.
