Enhancing Hands-On Learning with a 3D Printer

My Project

Our school’s Social Studies department, serving 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, is excited to bring history to life with the help of a 3D printer! We aim to create hands-on, interactive models that will make history and geography more engaging and accessible for all students.

As a designated MLL (Multilingual Learner) school, a 3D printer will allow teachers to produce tangible models of historical artifacts, landmarks, and tools.

This will help all my students learn no matter if they primarily speak English, Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, or Kinyarwanda.

With a 3D printer, we will create multiple copies of essential models aligned with our state standards:

U.S. History (8th): The Continental Divide, Revolutionary vs. Civil War muskets and cannons, the Statue of Liberty, the Wright brothers' airplane, Native American tipi, pueblo, and longhouse, the cotton gin, steam engine, and a clipper ship.

Utah History (7th): The Delicate Arch, a topographical model of Utah, Native American cliff dwellings, pit dwellings, wickiups, and tipis, a covered wagon or wagon train, the Salt Lake City Temple, a topographical model of the Great Salt Lake, the MX Missile Train, Topaz Internment Camp, central Utah lava tubes, a smelter, steam engine, and the Golden Spike.

World History (6th): The Ziggurat of Ur, Cuneiform tablets, the Rosetta Stone, the Great Pyramid of Giza, an Egyptian sarcophagus, a Roman aqueduct, the Mayan Pyramid of Chichen Itza, a Buddhist stupa, the printing press, a medieval castle, a Viking longship, a topographical model of the Fertile Crescent, and the Silk Road.

3D-printed models will allow students to interact with history in meaningful ways, making learning more immersive and memorable. These models will be used in small group stations, inquiry-based learning, and direct support for MLL students.
