This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My caseload is made up of 30 wonderful students in grades kindergarten through fifth. The students I work with come from very diverse backgrounds with many different cultures represented. About 90% of the students are English language learners and speak a language other than English at home. Communication is a foundation for daily life; however, many of my students lack the basic skills to express themselves and find daily academic and social tasks challenging. Due to the fact that a significant number of my students are learning English as a second language, often they lack the basic sound-letter correspondence, do not have basic reading skills, have a limited vocabulary, and struggle to comprehend information. Additionally, a significant number of students come from low-income households. My students work hard every day, and I am constantly looking for new ways to get them engaged in lessons and expose them to new experiences!
My Project
I am constantly looking for new ways to keep language lessons fun and engaging because students learn best when they are enjoying themselves.
I have found that many of my younger students are coming into the school setting lacking early language skills and I think these materials can help!
Many of them need exposure to these emerging language skills and new vocabulary in a hands-on way. During Pre-K to 2nd grade, enhancing these skills is so important. These materials will expose them to new vocabulary and help them understand the similarities and differences between items. The Stack & Build Emotion Kids and Moody Monsters will help me address social-emotional skills that are so important in student learning. These materials will also give my students the opportunity to engage in play while learning and work cooperatively with their peers.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
