My Students

I work at a public charter school located on Chicago's Southeast side. Eighty nine percent of our scholars qualify for free or reduced price lunch, and all of them live in the school's surrounding community in the Southeast side of Chicago. I am lucky enough to be a first grade teacher to the most loving, inquisitive, and enthusiastic children I've ever met (yes I'm biased, but it's true!) Every day I am so impressed by their wit, their persistence, and their curiosity. They truly give 100% of themselves each day so that they can reach their fullest potential.

My Project

These materials are vital to my students' growth, joy, and engagement in the classroom. Currently, my school does not have art as an elective.

Many of my students name art as a passion of theirs and request the opportunity to draw any chance they get!

I would love to implement art breaks during the day-- providing my students with their own individual set of colored pencils could help make that happen!

My students also engage in independent word work in which they study a new set of words each week and master their spelling. I want each of them to have access to a pocket dictionary so they can practice researching words and improve in their reading comprehension.

Lastly, my students would use the graphing notebooks to take organized math notes. My scholars are in 5th grade and preparing for middle school and they need to be equipped with the proper materials.
