My Project
In AP Calculus, physically handling and manipulating 3D printed models will provide a better grasp of complex three-dimensional solids that result from revolutions. This tactile experience will enhance spatial reasoning skills for my students who year after year exceed local, state and global averages on the AP Calculus exam, despite the fact that we are in a semi-rural area with much socioeconomic diversity.
By observing and interacting with 3D models, students will more easily comprehend the process of revolving a two-dimensional area around an axis, experiment with cross sections of 3D printed solids, and have a better understanding of the disk and washer methods of integration to find volumes.
These topics are typically among the most difficult for students to grasp in AP Calculus AB. Instruction will be much enhanced through the use of a 3D printer.
