Enhancing Comfort and Collaboration through Age Appropriate Seating

Help me give my students updated seating that will help my first grader's work collaboratively at their group tables and will replace the large, damaged, outdated chairs currently in my classroom.

My Project

Through research, I learned that the appropriate table and chair size can significantly affect student learning by impacting their comfort, posture, ability to collaborate, and overall engagement in the classroom. My goal is to make my students more comfortable with size appropriate chairs allowing them to collaborate throughout the day, have improved engagement with the material, and to promote active learning overall.

Much learning doesn't come natural to students and as a teacher, I must guide my students by providing abundant opportunities to practice and show that learning is engaging, participatory and fun.

This is made possible by removing physical hurdles. The classroom space and its coordinated furnishings should shape, even direct, the learning environment. My current classroom setup is outdated and not age appropriate for my first graders. The chairs my students currently sit in are not the right size for them developmentally.

Through research, I learned that when a student is sitting in a position where their entire foot is flat on the floor, that it indicates proper posture and comfortability, which is considered ideal for learning and concentration in a classroom setting. Currently, my chairs are too tall to support the small legs of my students, meaning their feet are suspended in the air and students are unable to be as close to their desk as possible. While providing chairs that are the right size for my students, I will be able to make sure my students are comfortable throughout the day, impacting their posture, ability to collaborate, and overall engagement.

Overall, these new spaces will help my first graders work collaboratively which ultimately allows them to navigate the social aspects of teamwork, including cooperation, conflict resolution, and compromise.
