Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is a juvenile boys' placement facility and high school. Our students arrive from various juvenile halls throughout the state, and many of them arrive with emotional problems, gang affiliations, anti-social behaviors, drug issues, family problems, and an assortment of legal issues that have led to their placement here. The boys are between the ages of thirteen to eighteen, who complete an average stay of six to nine months.

The purpose of our school facility is a two part-system: First, it provides a comprehensive educational program for the boys sent here, and second, the boys must successfully participate in the residential treatment program before their release.

The students live on campus, attend school and group sessions daily, and follow the structure and activities of the program. Our students attend school Monday through Friday and participate in a variety of group activities after school and on weekends. Through my project, I hope to give students additional reward time and opportunities for creative outlets and skill-building.

My Project

Who didn't love to play with LEGOS when they were a kid? Actually, many of my students have never played with Legos. Due to difficult economic and family life hardships, many of my students lacked basic experiences that most kids would generally have.

I would like to provide my students an opportunity to earn positive rewards with the Lego experience.

(i.e. one Friday a month; after major projects are completed). My students would appreciate these types of opportunities because it allows them some kind of incentive after they produce positive work and behavior. Most of them love to work with their hands and excel in building things when given the opportunities.

I believe Legos teach a variety of skills beyond subject-matter standards such as: patience, following an instruction booklet, categorizing and color-coding, symmetry, tactile and fine motor skills, team-building, and determination and perseverance to start a project and complete it. Not only does it allow them to "play" but is also a useful tool as a coping method for stress and anger.
