Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I had one of those moments with my bilingual students just last week when I gave them a homework assignment assuming they would have the resources at home to complete it. I was wrong.

I asked them to replace weak verbs with strong verbs and they were not able to do it. I was sure they could because we had been doing it in class. But when we were going over it in class, I remembered this was harder for them because they are English language learners. I asked them if they had dictionaries at home and all of them said no. I need to provide more support for them at home to make it easier to complete assignments.

I decided to write this proposal because having a dictionary at home will help my students with the reading and writing assignments that will help them to become better English speakers, readers and writers more quickly. They are surrounded by English print, books and models in the classroom. These dictionaries will bridge the language gap from school to home.

Your help will ensure that I can check out a dictionary for each of my students to use at home during the school year. This will enable them to see how important learning English is for them and their future.
