Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am teaching at the most diverse and highest poverty school in my community. I wanted to join this special campus because everywhere I look I can see potential: students who have to work hard to make it to school treasure their education and their campus. They do work hard, but they need materials to make it possible.
I am so proud of my English Learners, many of whom come to the United States for the safety and security our community can provide.
A student from Syria might not have many resources in a new country. A student displaced by COVID-19 might have arrived with simply their clothing. I want to offer them compassion, hope, and a safe place to learn in my classroom, no matter what it takes. After polling the class, they did not ask for phones, technology, or even gifts. They asked for pens, pencils, and highlighters. We need the basics to start the year right.
