My students need ESGI software to show their mastery and advancement of basic English skills. The software will allow the multiple teachers that work with these students to easily share and analyze data.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When visitors walk down the hallways of our school or pop into classrooms, it's not unusual for them to hear students speaking languages other than English. Our school has families speaking 43 different languages and our students share their languages and cultures to enrich the school experience.
Our diverse population means that many students speaking languages such as Spanish, Somali, Kurdish and Burmese work side-by-side to master the fundamentals of reading, writing, math, science and social studies all in a second or even third language.
My Project
My EL Specialist team works to provide additional support to our neediest English Learners. We have a transient population, and oftentimes we receive students in the upper grades who have never been in an English language program before. Simply put, monitoring student growth in letters, sounds, and sight words is a challenge in these older classrooms where the focus is on reading complex texts. Our EL Specialist team works with co-teaching and pull-out models. It's important that we be in regular communication with our teaching partners to drive student success.
ESGI is a fantastic web-based software that allows for quick and efficient data collection that our teachers need in order to best service our English Learners.
We can use prepared assessments or create our own assessments as needed. I used this program with our first grade team last year and saw the most significant gains of any of my years teaching first grade. It's also a great tool to communicate with parents as it generates easy to read reports.
