My Students
My students are fun, compassionate, and curious young children. When they arrive to school in the morning, they race to the schedule, excited to find out what is on the agenda for the day. Every day is fresh, new, and exciting!
My diverse, primarily low-income school is located in a tight-knit community in the heart of San Francisco.
Many of my students' cousins, parents, and even grandparents have attended our school! We also have a large number of immigrant families whom we welcome with open arms. The community bond shows through as students giggle, play, and learn together throughout the day.
My Project
Every year I have a large number of English Learners in my class. I strive to learn new strategies to help these children build their social and academic vocabularies. By allowing students plenty of time for open-ended as well as structured conversations with peers and myself, I hope to help them build confidence as they approach a difficult, brand new language.
One way I initiate rich conversation is through engaging read alouds!
Kindergarteners absolutely love being read to. It is a wonderful time of day when every child, no matter their learning needs, can participate and enjoy learning. Unfortunately, it can be difficult finding books featuring diverse characters. I make it a priority to ensure that every child can find a character they relate to, whether that character shares their race, language, special needs, or personality traits. By incorporating read alouds and shared reading into my daily schedule, I ensure that every child has access to rich literacy instruction and conversation starters, helping them become the best readers, speakers, and listeners they can be.
