My students need games and hands-on centers much more than worksheets and textbooks. My students especially need help learning phonics and phonemic awareness. They also need experience speaking and listening to the English language.

My Students
We are a kindergarten classroom in the Bronx. All of my students come from low income homes. They come in eager to learn but sometimes we do not have the resources. The neighborhood that my students grow up in is not the safest which means school must be a treasured experience at all times. My students have such a strong desire to learn, regardless of any obstacle in their way.
My students come from different places, but, in our classroom, we are a family.
They deserve a classroom that promotes not only that family feeling but a strong learning environment as well.
My Project
My students enjoy games and hands-on centers that are bright colors, have interesting content, and exciting games like picture bingo, vocabulary photo cards and alphabet game tablets. Leveled centers that address the students' academic needs will allow me to work with several students who are at different stages of acquiring the language.
Student engagement is much more effective than worksheets and textbook learning.
Many of my students struggle with all domains of the English language. These games and materials will help my students build their knowledge of the English language in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The fact that they can be easily used as a ready to go center is a plus. By working in small groups, they will be building multiple skills at once.
