Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students come from diverse backgrounds in a Title I school district, meaning that many of our families struggle with economic disadvantage. Many of our students are also learning English as a second language, as they come from families where Spanish is spoken at home.
Our students face many challenges in their young lives and school becomes a place where they can feel a sense of peace, belonging, and consistency.
They come to school eager to learn and participate in the school community.
My Project
My students are going to love these "real" store items and manipulatives to begin grasping the difficult concept of financial literacy. Every week during our financial literacy unit, I will create different tasks for the students. Together we will use number concepts like addition, subtraction, comparing and counting money to complete tasks in our store. The students who are receiving face-to-face instruction can record their grocery store activities so that the students at home can learn along with us! As their skills grow, we will explore the relationship of coins to base 10 blocks and ten frames. By the end, my students will have an in-depth understanding of the financial literacy objectives for first grade!
