This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have an enthusiastic group of 49 English Language Learners. They are eager to learn and explore. My students celebrate their ability to speak more than one language. They love to learn new things every day and engage in appropriate academic language instruction.
My students are primarily from Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
I always encourage them to speak their native language in class.
My students love to ask questions and acquire new language developments. Some of my students do not speak any English and are eager and ready to learn it!
My Project
This project will fund several items that are essential to the instruction in my classroom. We are a Title 1 school and funds are limited. This year, my students are focusing on vocabulary, writing and literacy. The materials I ask for in this project are essential in their academic language development.
As a new teacher, this year I want to give my students the best possible instruction to achieve a well rounded academic education.
Funds are scarce at my school and materials are hard to come by. A variety of books are needed in my classroom to increase their academic language, and to interest and inspire them. A variety of books in their home language is also needed so that they can retain the language. My students need English/Spanish dictionaries to help them when they are writing and reading. Making the lessons culturally relevant to them is also an integral part of their learning; for this they need a globe that we can constantly reference during our lessons. A set of headphones is also needed for differentiated instruction when my students need to work on a tablet for listening skills.
