FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Hynes's classroom raised $347

I am currently an English as a Second Language (ESL) instructor in a low-income neighborhood of New York City. I teach grades 3 - 8 daily, and my students range in skill level from non-English speaking to nearly proficient. Despite the challenges that this variety in age, skill, and ability present, I am dedicated to promoting literacy in my classroom.
The truth is - My students are struggling readers and even non-readers. Only a quarter of the students I see are reading on grade level - while the remaining students are several years behind or just learning to read years behind. For many of these students, a giant hurdle they are faced with is developing fluency, both oral and reading, in the English language. Often, they see text as words on a page that must be rushed through irregardless of punctuation, quotations, pronunciation, or appropriate emotions. Very few of my students possess the ability to recognize and pause or react to punctuation or dialog. While many of them would benefit from being read to in English on a daily basis at school and at home, this is not always possible.
In order to help my students develop their English reading skills, their listening skills, and their oral reading skills, I would like to provide struggling students and guided reading groups with the opportunity to listen to interesting and even challenging texts being read aloud. In order to do so, I would like to create a listening station in the classroom. This would be a wooden station to hold the headphones, cd/tape player, and junction box needed in order to have group read alongs.
I am confident that my students will see their English speaking/reading abilities skyrocket with access to a listening center. With your donation, you will enable my students to not only improve their reading skills, but also help to foster in them a life-long love of reading.
