My Students

I have 32 wonderful and bright students. They are all eager to learn many things in kindergarten. As a new teacher, I am motivated to bring new and exciting ideas into the classroom. I teach low-income students in a Chicago neighborhood. My school is awesome; unfortunately, it lacks the necessary funding that is greatly needed. The principal and the staff are great to work with. We all help each other in order to benefit student learning which is most important to me as an educator. Without funding, the students are not given supplies needed to complete the school year.

I teach ESL students reading, math, writing, social studies, and science.

My students love participating in centers for reading and math, but I would love to incorporate a writing center filled with the right materials.

My Project

Five- and six-year-olds are natural, enthusiastic learners. Their impulse to ask questions, to investigate, and to explore, examine, and experiment, comes from a burning curiosity about the world and a desire to understand things. They learn, grow, and internalize through interactive experiences with each other, with adults, and with real materials that require all of their senses. For this reason, I spend careful time planning diverse learning centers, with open-ended activities and hands-on materials, to use throughout the year.

Learning centers are areas within the classroom where students learn about specific subjects by playing and engaging in activities.

Play is an active form of learning that involves the whole self. Even cognitive development, the primary focus in today's kindergarten, is achieved through child-initiated exploration and discovery.

In this project, I am asking for two sets of the Language Instant Learning Centers. The ready-to-use centers make independent learning a breeze even for nonreaders! The centers have everything children need to build beginning language skills from word building and rhyming sounds to sight-word recognition. I will set out the materials, introduce the activity and let students work at their own pace. Each center is designed for up to 4 children to work at once, with a double-sided instruction chart that gives everyone easy access to the activities and simple picture instructions students can follow on their own.
