My Students
The biggest challenge in our classroom is learning in two languages (Spanish and English). It has been a great experience to learn both, but it has been very, very difficult.
My students are a group of bilingual students who attend a charter school in a high poverty area of the inner-city.
They are such a wonderful group of kids, dedicated to learning and very well-behaved. Their neighborhood is dangerous, plagued by gang violence and extremely high drop-out rates. Our school is brand new, and we have a long waiting list to attend. The students are very fortunate to be here because we are dual language, and we have a very caring environment. They are doing their best to learn English in this community where most kids their age fail to learn English by middle school. I teach them English for about three hours a day. We need resources to help us master English.
My Project
One of the main components of a balanced literacy block is the read aloud section. We have some materials for a read-aloud, but they are really weak. They are just transparencies or a teacher-edition book that I read from and they listen. I want students to be able to hold the book in their hands that we read and to become invested in it. When we receive these books, we will be able to sit as a whole group and read the whole book together. Then, we will be able to study it together and I will be able to assess them based on it. All of these steps are really important for having students master English. I am excited to be able to read these books with the kids.
Unless you have experienced it yourself, you probably do not understand the full importance of bilingual students learning English at a young age.
Most of their bilingual peers will really, really struggle with English and it can eventually lead to those students dropping out of school. I want a better future than that for my students.
