The students and student-athletes I teach and coach travel from every New York City borough to attend class. Living here shares the same difficulties you see anywhere else – but with higher average costs of living. Going from place to place is not easy. Commutes can take up a sizable portion of the day. Yet this is the only way of life many of my student-athletes know. So after a long school day, both boys and girls deserve to unwind and play a unique game that offers benefits different from those acquired in the classroom.
Enter: the sport of rugby.
As the City of New York struggles to meet the physical and dietary health needs of its students, I work beyond the school day to influence young lives through sport. Going to school and practice, and commuting to and from matches is time-consuming. Many sacrifices are made by the families involved. However, all of the time, money, and energy invested show its value when our accomplishments stretch from the field, back to school and family, and return to the community.
My Project
Amid the COVID variants, we still anticipate a Rugby 15s season in the spring for both the boys' rugby and the girls' rugby teams. With the assist from our Fans of Rugby, after some supplier struggles, we were able to purchase custom team Paladin rugby kits (i.e. jerseys, shorts, and socks) to outfit our sevens, rugby teams, this past fall season. Now we'll be extending one of the kit designs so we can dress a 23-player roster for our inaugural Rugby 15s season in Spring 2022. Please accept our appreciation in advance.
