Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are inquisitive and love to learn by doing. They also appreciate a good engineering challenge. I believe in the importance of the productive struggle that comes with STEM challenges; these allow my students to develop hypotheses, an action plan, and, through trial and error, they are capable of completing challenging tasks. I noticed that when I integrate these hands-on activities, my students are more engaged and willing to view failure as a learning opportunity.

My goal is to integrate STEM challenges into my classroom to push my students to use critical thinking to solve challenging problems.

These skills are essential for 5th graders to succeed in math and science.

The LEGO and magnetic tiles are great tools to represent fractions and create 3D geometrical shapes. I will use the marshmallows and toothpicks to create models that represent food webs and energy transfer. These materials can also be used when learning about the movement of plate tectonics and how these cause natural disasters; students will be challenged to build structures that can resist an earthquake. Additionally, I will review forces and motion by challenging students to create airplanes with straws and a balloon.

I wish to create a learning environment where students are not afraid of failure, and these projects are fantastic tools to teach students about resiliency and problem-solving. All materials will be used to complete various STEM activities that will engage and challenge.
