The students at my school come from all walks of life and when they walk through the doors they know their principal, teachers, support staff and fellow students are all looking out for them.
The teachers at my school are hard-working, engaging, motivating, creative and passionate.
They want everyone to learn and be passionate about something, whether it be nature, sports, the arts and technology to name a few.
Different ethnicities, home lives, spoken languages, socioeconomic backgrounds, parental support and living environments are increasingly characteristic of our school.
My Project
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) is an increasingly important part of today's core curriculum in K-6 classrooms. Devoting more time to it becomes increasingly more difficult due to all the curricular demands placed on elementary teachers today.
Creating an after-school LEGO engineering program, using the LEGO Mindstorms kits, for all 400+ students at my school offers more time and opportunity to integrate STEM into student's lives.
These kits give students the power to build, program and command robots that can accomplish specific tasks, which are the challenges that students will undertake, with instruction provided by dedicated teachers, staff and parents and the crucial teamwork aspect that comes from working with peers.
These materials and this after-school program will encourage more scientific and mathematical thinking by students, which will directly impact their classroom academics as well as state and national testing mandates.
