Engineering the Future!

My students need computers in our classroom so they can test and simulate their build ideas in a real-world environment that is not always possible in the classroom.

My Students

My students have a variety of backgrounds and family situations. They are from rural, urban and suburban backgrounds, and with this variety of student backgrounds, we have a very diverse school population. Because of this variety in our student population, we have students who have been exposed to the Engineering process for their entire lives, and then students who have never been exposed to the Engineering Process.

I have been fortunate to be able to start a new program, Inspiring Elementary Engineering (IE2), at my school.

Every day I have students from Kindergarten through fifth grade, and ALL of them work through the Engineering Process to solve problems. In each IE2 class, students must work together with their team to solve a problem posed with the Engineering Process.

My Project

Every day when my students, kindergarten through fifth grade come into my engineering class, they are challenged to use the Engineering Process: asking a question, planning with their team, blueprinting with their team, building a model, testing their model and improving. Finally they have to share their build with the class.

Adding the technology aspect to our Engineering Process, students will be able to design and "build" virtually, which will allow them to build and test designs that are not able to be built and tested in the traditional classroom setting.

With the laptops, students will see how "real engineers" design, and virtually build their ideas.
