Engineering Materials for Second Graders

Help me give my students materials for exciting and engaging engineering tasks connected to literacy!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Pendleton's classroom raised $484

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students are excited to start a new school year! Second grade will be an important year of growth and learning both academically and emotionally. It's important that students have access to the materials they need to cultivate their minds.

My Sheltered English Immersion classroom is comprised of 25 English Language Learners.

All students are from inner city areas of Boston and are still at the beginning stages of language acquisition. For some students, this will be their first time in a formalized school setting. We are all working very hard to realize engaging and rigorous educational opportunities for everyone in our classroom!

My Project

This project will provide our classroom with materials to use for engineering projects throughout the year. For young learners, engineering challenges connected to literacy and units of study can be very engaging. Can you build a house that won't get blown down by the Big Bad Wolf? Your materials consist of index cards, craft sticks, paper towel rolls, and tape. A fan will make an appearance as the Big Bad Wolf. Can you design a raft for the Gingerbread Man? It will need to keep him completely dry in a bucket of water, or he will crumble! October is a fun time to learn about spiders - can you build a web that mimics a real spider web? How many plastic flies can your web hold?

Throughout these age-appropriate challenges, students are fully engaged in the engineering process.

Students identify the problem, brainstorm possible solutions, choose the most promising solution, build a prototype, test the prototype, reflect and rebuild. All the while developing flexibility, creativity, and perseverance!
