My students need a classroom set of K'NEX Real Bridge building pieces to build models of the different types of bridges we will study and display.

My Students
Remember what it was like building with Lego's or K'NEX as a kid? I want that same experience for my students in our classroom with specific learning tasks in mind. We will study the different types of bridges and the physics behind their construction as well as famous bridges around the world.
I teach 40 wonderful, bright, talented and creative eager to learn students, in the second and third grades in a low income community.
Most of our community's jobs have been lost because of closings and our public schools have had to lay off teachers and drastically cut budgets because of the state budget cuts. We are in desperate need of hands-on construction supplies. The students cannot afford to buy their own and our school district has had to cut our budget. There just isn't any money available to buy advanced learning supplies or much of any supplies for learning for that matter.
My Project
If my gifted students had the K'NEX Bridge Building set they would be able to build 13 different types of bridges to display with our studies of the physics and engineering of bridges. This type of resource could mean the difference in becoming an engineer for some of my students. We do not have these hands-on construction types of resources in our school. Experiencing first hand the physics behind bridge construction and planning might motivate some of my gifted students to become engineers one day. It definitely would give them a better understanding of the physics involved. Learning about these famous iconic bridges from around the world will take them on wonderful learning adventures in times and places they will always remember.
The K'NEX Bridge Building set promotes the development of quality learning environments in the areas of math, science and literacy necessary for future success in the workforce and in life.
The students will learn the importance of closely following blueprints and directions and checking for mistakes. They will learn about tension and compression and discover that arches and domes provide weight-bearing ability. It could mean the difference in a wonderful future for them.
