My Students

Our inner city students come from various backgrounds, and English is not always their native language. They come to school wanting to learn, and they work hard because school is the safest place for a lot of them. We are a Title I school where 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

When working in the Discovery Lab, it’s about applying creative thinking and design skills to transform our STEM projects to STEAM projects, encouraging students to imagine all the possibilities when their creative thinking meshes with engineering.

Going from a STEM school to a STEAM school is an important transition to show students the role art plays not only in the design process but in everyday life throughout our world. It's also about engagement.

When students enter my lab, excitement builds because they know they have challenges that they need to face like engineers, scientists, and many other creative professionals do in the real world. Students love working with their hands to create something or solve a problem. Our school is a wonderful place to learn because of the environment created by the staff. We show our love of learning to our students.

My Project

The Maker Movement allows schools to figuring things out through the engineering and design process using hands on experiences. This is a movement that will allow students to be creative, innovative, independent, and technologically literate; not an “alternative” way to learn, but what modern learning should really look like! The Maker Movement is at the heart of STEM learning! Every single student from grades K through 5 have the unique opportunity to use any of the materials in our Maker Space area to help build their weekly engineering challenge. At the beginning of each year it is up to me to figure out how to fund our Maker Space and right now due to severe budget cuts, I'm turning to you for help!

When you take a look at the various materials requested such as pipe cleaner, buttons, beads, and popsicle sticks, most people see these materials as purely art supplies, but students at my school see these materials through a world where art meets engineering to design something amazing!

They see all of these wonderful items as a way to get their project to come to life. The best part is, no two designs every looks exactly alike. They may have similar working pieces, but they are never exactly the same. My students LOVE hard work and engineer solutions, but we need materials to make this happen!
