My Students
My students are fun, compassionate, and curious young children. When they arrive at school in the morning, they race to the schedule, excited to find out what is on the agenda for the day. Every day is fresh, new, and exciting!
Our school is one of the most diverse in the district, and is located in a tight-knit community in the heart of San Francisco.
Many of my students' cousins, parents, and even grandparents have attended our school! The community bond shows through as students giggle, play, and learn together throughout the day.
My Project
For the past two years, I have been working with teachers throughout my district to explore new science and engineering standards. After two years of hard work, I am beginning to feel confident and excited about engaging my students in these new standards.
In an effort to incorporate engineering challenges into our weekly or monthly routine, I would like to create bins of go-to materials for students to build and test new ideas.
For example, students recently built structures that would protect animals from the harmful effects of the sun. My students created amazing structures using the recycled materials we had: cardboard strips, toilet paper rolls, and paper scraps. They are now hooked on engineering; they even ask to engineer during choice time! With your help, we would have enough supplies to last for an entire year of authentic and engaging challenges. Craft sticks, pipe cleaners and index cards provide a blank slate for children to use creatively for many different applications. Masking tape holds everything together, and it is easily manipulated by little hands. Flair pens will allow students to draw and revise their plans, and Ziploc bags will allow us to save unfinished projects and safely transport them home.
By engaging students in authentic engineering challenges, I hope to show them that they can work together to solve the problems of our world.
