My Students
In Room 11, we love school! We do hands-on. We do open ended. We do technology. We do research. We do higher order thinking. Creativity. Collaboration. Communication. We dive in head first. And it is exciting! We are STEM: Science Technology Engineering Mathematics. We go big or go home.
My students are fourth and fifth graders at our fantastic rural school in the Sierra Nevada foothills.
There are 32 students who I try to make a dynamic impact on every single day. They are a high energy bunch that need lots of TLC and exciting, engaging lessons, explorations, and challenging opportunities that build pride and self-confidence. They are excited every single day, and want to be involved in stimulating, active learning. Science and engineering investigations are the crowd favorite, by far. Another popular interest is to be selected as the Room 11 Science Ambassadors, who go to other classrooms to lead investigations as "student teachers". While uncovering hundreds of other focus questions, they end up teaching me far more than I can ever teach them. They are rowdy, excitable, curious, wonderful, and enthusiastic, squared. I wish you could meet them!
My Project
My students need four littleBits Deluxe Kits for engaging materials to learn about problem solving and electricity, while being creative. LittleBits are the perfect classroom material to propose science and engineering design crossover challenges. In addition to learning the basics of electrical circuits, my students will be able to explore, invent, and problem solve. Projects will include making interactive toys, studying bioluminescence, conducting an earthquake simulation and data analysis, building cars to study Newton's Law of Motion, using knowledge of circuits, motors, and motion to design drawing bots, simulating DaVinci's designs...the possibilities really are endless.
From any given design challenge, new curiosities and big ideas will spring forth from the kids. Of course, I will guide them to frame their musiings into a challenge to be explored by the class. I cannot begin to imagine where their minds can take us!
Your donation will help to provide materials that go beyond the basics of understanding electrical circuits.
It will provide engaging materials that inspire tenacity, creativity, and curiosity!
