Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a fabulous group of hardworking scholars at a large urban school in Southern California. I have 26 active, curious learners. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and socioeconomic levels, and the one thing that unites them is their respect for one another, collaboration, and a desire to create. They come to school each day prepared to work hard, learn, problem solve, and face new challenges. They are kind, funny, and inquisitive. They love to propose ideas, suggestions, and problem solve through hands-on investigations. I feel privileged to work with such an amazing group of students.
My Project
Children are fascinated with building things and taking things apart to see how they work. My project includes resources describing different kinds of bridges, their history, design, and construction to give them information before creating a replica bridge using a building set by K'NEX. Engineering activities are based on real-world technologies and problems, they help children see how disciplines like math and science are relevant to their lives. Students also have the opportunity to see that failure is an important part of the problem-solving process and a positive way to learn. Engineering lessons encourage collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity while developing communication skills. Research also shows that when engineering is part of elementary instruction, students become more aware of the diverse opportunities for engineering, science, and technical careers—and they are more likely to see these careers as options they could choose. This finding is important because the number of U.S. college students pursuing engineering education is decreasing. It's imperative to provide students with engineering lessons that can enhance their learning.
