Engineering a Living Medicine for Patients with PKU.

Help me give my students by giving the gift of exploring phenylketonuria (PKU) and how genetic engineering a chromosome can be used to have bacteria help people with PKU.

My Project

Students will be using the kit from Science Take-Out called "Engineering a Living Medicine". In this kit, students will explore a scenario where a woman has phenylketonuria (PKU). She is unable to make an enzyme to process an amino acid found in most food called phenylalanine.

Students explore how genetically engineering a chromosome can help people with PKU.

Genetically engineering can be used to turn bacteria to live in her digestive tract to produce enzymes that help keep phenylalanine levels down. Students use this experiment to model the safety and effectiveness of the genetically engineered chromosome to be used as a "living medicine".
