My Students
"Can we get more of these? We love building! This is really engineering?"
That is what I heard when I got my first K'NEX sets for bridge building. I realized that a lot of my students have a desire to be engineers.
I teach 115 gifted children in grades 3 through 6 in two rural schools in Alabama.
My students love to learn and need the latest technology and material to help them. They are so curious and want to try new things, and I want to be sure they have the opportunity to do this. My state does not fully fund gifted education and funding is left up to the individual school districts. That means my students are the last to receive the needed material they need to make the most of their talents and gifts.
My Project
Have you ever watched children at play? You know they are fascinated with building things and with taking things apart to see how they work. In other words, children are natural-born engineers.
My students need six K'NEX Amazin' 8 Coaster Building Sets. These K'NEX sets allow them to use their physics knowledge by building roller coasters. When children engineer in a school setting, research suggests several positive results including increasing science and math skills, classroom equity, 21st century skills, and career success because they are working in teams.
The K'NEX kits will allow my students to be engineers. Along with this, they will be learning about important physics principles and concepts including centrifugal force, kinetic energy, and Newton's Laws of Motion.
These K'NEX kits will allow my students to experience all these things in a classroom setting: building, equity, and improved skills.
They will eventually lead to career success. Engineering and technological literacy will be critical for my students to make informed decisions in the 21st century to improve the lives of all of our citizens.
