I teach 24 low income 4-year-old kindergartners in an urban school district. All of the students that attend my school receive free breakfast and lunch on a daily basis. The students I work with are exposed to extreme amounts of violence and several have families that are unable to support them financially.
My students lack the materials they need to be successful in the classroom, especially with our school district's tight budget.
My students appreciate every donation our classroom receives and everything that comes into our classroom is put to good use.
My Project
My students need a variety of different books to enhance their literacy skills. Reading is an essential skill for young students and I would love for my class to have different book options to read based on their individual interests.
We no longer have a librarian at our school due to budget cuts therefore, the library is no longer available for students to check out books.
I want to provide my students with engaging books to foster a life-long love for reading. The books I have chosen align with different themes and units we will be working on throughout the school year. I read aloud to the students every day with a focus on specific literacy skills we work on in our reading centers.
Many of the books we currently have are old, outdated, and in poor condition. I would love to have new books for my students to help them learn and create a passion for reading. Please help us fill our bookshelves with new, engaging texts.
