My Project

Helping ELL and Reluctant Readers Thrive in High School

As a passionate educator in a vibrant and diverse high school, I'm committed to making reading an accessible and enjoyable experience for all my students.

This year, I'm particularly focused on supporting our English Language Learners and students who find conventional reading challenging or uninteresting. To achieve this, I'm requesting a collection of graphic novels.

Why Graphic Novels?

Graphic novels are not just "comics" – they are powerful storytelling tools that combine visual art with rich language, making complex ideas more digestible and engaging.

They are particularly effective for English Language Learners because the combination of text and visuals aids in understanding and vocabulary acquisition.

It also benefits readers with low reading interest. The visual element piques interest, encouraging students to explore stories and themes they might otherwise avoid.

My goal is to build a library of graphic novels that:

-Reflects diverse cultures and perspectives, resonating with our school's diverse student body.

-Includes both contemporary and classic stories, broadening our students' literary horizons.

-Supports curriculum goals, especially in enhancing comprehension and critical thinking skills.

Impact:

By integrating graphic novels into our resources, I aim to:

-Foster a love of reading and storytelling among all students.

-Improve language skills, especially for our ELL students.

-Create an inclusive learning environment where every student feels represented and engaged.

Your contribution will not only help me purchase these graphic novels but also ignite a passion for reading in students who might otherwise feel left behind. Together, we can open new worlds for these young minds, one page at a time.
